Tonight at midnight, Apple’s new iPhone 4 finally reaches down under, and if you have not already heard, there can be some reception issues with the device when held in a particular way due to the antenna placement and the natural conductivity of the human body. This is a short message addressed in advance to the haters who I’m sure will emerge from their basements and who don’t actually have any friends to call anyway.
In the US, Apple is offering free cases AKA Bumpers to all iPhone 4 owners which prevents said reception problem, and it looks like the same will happen here (or at least something similar). That said, I think it’s a good idea to get a case anyway, I know I have in the past. So this actually works out good, I get a free case that I would have to otherwise pay for.
There’s no doubt the iPhone is a High Tech device, although some would argue that some other Smartphones have even “higher” tech parts inside (if that makes sense), however, and this might just be my opinion, but, there are reasons why the iPhone is not only better, but also more appealing to many people, including but not limited to; user interface (it looks pretty, and it is straight forward to use, if your not a n00b); physically pleasing (slim, modern design), the amount of available fun and useful apps (there’s shit loads!) and I could go on, and into more detail, but this was meant to be a short post lol.
So in conclusion, you could get the iPhone 4, a High Tech touch screen device, with a lot of features, functionality, access to sooooo many fun and useful apps and get a free case to fix the reception problem OR, and here is a line I use all to often during heated iPhone debates: “Get a Blackberry” (just repeat it 6 or 7 times until the other party either threatens you with Grievous iPhone harm or throws a tantrum) and have fun with that mini keyboard they zapped with a shrink ray (error: your fingers are too fat to type on this keyboard) or, god forbid, one of those stylus pens, guaranteed to make you look nerdy, at least x10.
Fantastic news today from the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF). After a lot of hard work and mountains of paperwork, jailbreaking your iPhone is now explicitly a permitted fair use under the DMCA!
…The EFF also successfully renewed the existing DMCA exception for carrier…

When it comes to “hacking” the iPhone, There are 2 main concepts to be aware of:
1. Jailbreaking
Jailbreaking is applicable to the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. It modifies the the software on the device to allow you to do stuff that Apple doesn’t normally allow. You see, the software on these devices is restricted by Apple to prevent people from tampering and potentially making their devices unstable. Also, Apple does this to prevent piracy of, for example, apps, and so that they can control what we do to benefit themselves and their partners financially :P
However, there are many legitimate reasons for Jailbreaking, including to add functionality and to customize the look of ones iDevice using themes. One the most useful reasons for jailbreaking is unlocking, note this only applies to the iPhone (and maybe the iPad later, but so far I haven’t heard about that).
2. Unlocking
Unlocking allows you to use your iPhone on any network provider, this means you can use any sim card, pre paid or plan, and in any country. This is handy for example if you got your iPhone with Optus, but at the end of your contract you decide to try Telstra or go pre paid on another network. It is also useful when traveling, you can buy a cheap sim, make a few calls without having to get another phone that works in that country.
Legal?
Jailbreaking is now 100%, officially legal, for more info visit this link:http://blog.iphone-dev.org/post/862193913/getting-out-of-jail-is-free

AppCleaner is a free application that makes it easy to completely remove programs from your Mac. Download from their website: http://www.freemacsoft.net/AppCleaner
Before all of you Windows fan boys throw your trigger fingers in the air (please don’t shoot me) asking why don’t Mac’s ship with an uninstaller program, its because in most cases its not needed - a simple drag and drop to the trash will suffice for most things. The reason for this is that all of the application files are stored within the app itself, think of an app as being a folder which keeps all of its files inside. So why would we need an app like AppCleaner? Well firstly, some apps install other files to your hard drive, so for the control freak (like myself) who wants to make sure every associated file is removed, AppCleaner can give you that piece of mind. The second reason is that when you open an app on a Mac, it creates a preference file on your hard drive that stores settings for that app. These files are very small, and I doubt they could ever fill up your hard drive, but if these files become corrupt or damaged, they can cause the corresponding app to malfunction. So rather than try to track down the preference file yourself, AppCleaner will take care of it for you.
If you believe an app is not functioning correctly, I recommend giving app cleaner a go. To use it, simply drag and drop the app you want to remove to AppCleaner’s window, then click delete, and then empty the trash.
Hope this helps and clears a few things up!
